describe your style in three words.
Essential, meaningful (to me), unpredictable.
Tell us the story behind your favorite wardrobe piece.
Many of my most treasured wardrobe pieces were given to me by my maternal grandmother with whom I found a common connection in dressing as a means of self-expression. I have very fond memories of getting lost in the expanse of her closet, each time finding new treasures that came with their own histories. A few years back she gifted me an insanely gorgeous tapestry coat from the 70s, it's in close to perfect condition and lined with shearling. It actually also came with a shearling bucket hat to match. I would say my style (and possibly my personality) now hinges on this one coat, and when I put it on I can feel her arms wrapping around me.
Give us a glimpse into how you capture intimate moments in your art?
In reflection of the art I've created over the last decade, it reads to me as an exploration of intimacy with oneself. Whether it's through writing essays on the female experience or working with clay to explore the metaphor of the woman as a vessel and what we carry with us, I always come back to the individual self, and what's more intimate than knowing (and being honest with) oneself?
Are there any daily rituals you can't live without?
My morning coffee ritual is something I go to bed anticipating. I can't bring myself to buy an automated espresso machine and find my pour-over routine to be a form of meditation.
Lately, I've been finding a ton of joy in what my partner and I call "coffee walks" which is just as it sounds. It's our time to connect before the day.
What does it mean to be a modern woman?
Exercising your ability to define life on your own terms, while advocating for yourself and others.
Name a few qualities that you believe are critical to a conscious relationship?
I think the most beautiful part of a conscious relationship is what can be created beyond ourselves when two people come together and agree to choose co-commitment over co-dependency.
I would say there's an incredible freedom to be yourself and explore your identity in the world as an individual and couple when the baseline is an agreement made consciously.
What's a small way you've introduced sustainability into your lifestyle?
About five years ago I made a conscious effort to stop shopping fast fashion, and instead invest in pieces that could exist as evergreen staples in my wardrobe. This decision led me back to my love for vintage shopping which I've found not only limits my consumption but also invigorates my excitement for dressing with individuality. Beyond that, I try to opt for natural fiber fabrics, and naturally dyed fabrics as much as I can.
What affirmation are you living by right now?
I am a vessel for wisdom, knowledge, and pleasure to flow through."and "You can do hard things." Which I say with much less conviction.
